Challenges and Choices in Building an Infrastructure-as-a-Service Cloud ($)
Access: Online purchase and email delivery. (see below)
Abstract:
The challenges for would-be cloud providers, both public and private, begin when considering how to design and build the core infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) capabilities. Elasticity, multi-tenancy and self-service are not easy technologies to implement and most IT organizations don’t have staff with the required skills. Research by Neovise has found that only 36% of existing cloud service providers built their IaaS clouds from the ground up. Most of the others used cloud enabling platforms (also called cloud management solutions or IaaS enabling platforms) and / or other commercial components as the primary basis of their IaaS cloud offerings.
This four page perspective report outlines many of the dimensions that should be considered when selecting a cloud enabling platform. It then adds the perspective of cloud service provider CARInet, including its experience with Abiquo -- a software based cloud management solution. The report wraps up with additional perspective from Neovise on Abiquo as a cloud management solution.
