Getting Started with Cloud Computing: Beyond the Hype with Infrastructure as a Service ($)
Access: Online purchase and email delivery. (see below)
Abstract:
This 27 page report is meant to help business and IT organizations understand cloud computing so they can best decide whether, when and how to get started. It begins by clarifying what cloud computing means today. But it does not provide just another cloud computing definition. Instead, it walks the reader through the essential aspects of cloud computing while leveraging the definitions provided by the Information Technology Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards (NIST).
One type of cloud computing service recognized by the NIST is known as infrastructure as a service (IaaS). While IaaS may be the foundation service of cloud computing, it is not the only service. In order to provide the breadth of knowledge required to understand and begin to evaluate IaaS solutions, this report also addresses software as a service (SaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS).
With this base level of knowledge in place, the related benefits of cloud computing are then examined. By understanding the potential benefits, readers will see how different cloud computing really is from traditional forms of IT. These differences are what lead to the unique benefits only found through IaaS and other forms of cloud computing. Based on this information readers will be able to determine if cloud computing is worthy of further consideration, whether now or in the future.
This report wraps up with information helpful in evaluating available IaaS solutions. After a brief discussion on selecting the right IaaS solution, a list of more than 30 criteria to consider during the evaluation process is presented. The report then lists profiles of 15 major IaaS solutions so that readers can learn more about a variety of IaaS services. Each one-page profile describes an IaaS solution from the perspective of the service provider. Each profile also includes solution highlights as noted by Neovise.
