In May 2009, IBM announced the availability of its unique “stream computing” software that enables massive amounts of structured as well as unstructured data to be analyzed in real time while still in motion, delivering extremely fast and accurate insights to enable smarter business decision-making. The new software is called InfoSphere Streams is based on a research project titled System S at the IBM research labs. This first-of-a-kind software platform is based upon more than two decades of IBM information management expertise, five years of development by IBM Research, more than 200 patents, and represents a breakthrough in the application of analytics to perpetual data streams.
